Are you an intimate person? To find out, ask yourself whether the following statements apply to you Never (N), Seldom (S), or Often (O).
- You spend time and energy cultivating and tending your friendships.
- You maintain friendships with members of the opposite sex with whom you are not romantically involved
- You like to touch and be touched in affectionate ways
- Sexual intimacy for you is a way of expressing and sharing your feelings of closeness to another
- You enjoy solitude without being lonely and are comfortable with your different moods and feelings.
- You feel naturally high either alone or in the company of others without ever needing the help of alcohol or drugs
- You feel accepted, cherished, valued and understood by your family and friends
- You express feelings of anger as well as of tenderness, and display grief as well as joy with those individuals closest to you
- You enjoy listening to other people's life stories and philosophies and try to figure out what makes them tick
- You share your secret shames and dreams, your self-doubts as well as your cherished hopes
- You can tell what other people are feeling and empathize with them
- Other people seem friendly and respond generously when you make an effort to show them you care
To arrive at your total, do the following:
Give yourself a score of 1 for every (N) never, a 2 for every (S) seldom; a 3 for every (O) Often.
Your intimacy quotient is low if you score 12, medium is you score 24, and high if you score in the neighborhood of 36.
To get another perspective, ask the person with whom you are most intimate to score you, then compare the totals.
